When one first hears of Quickspin’s new Dragon Shrine video slot, one might expect the game to be littered with Chinese cultural symbols, not least including big red dragons, and beautiful temples.

As a matter of fact, though, those symbols appear few and far between in this slot. What Dragon Shrine is really all about is simplicity. There are general big block icons, generic high playing card icons, and general features aplenty.

Anybody holding out hope that Quickspin has developed a truly original and classy Chinese culture themed slot is going to be woefully disappointed with what Dragon Shrine actually has to offer then.

Developers

Dragon Shrine is slightly different to other Quickspin slots, in that it features a slightly different reel structure (fewer symbols in total over the reels) then their usual games. It isn’t too big a stray from the familiar for Quickspin, though.

They are known for producing overly elementary slot machine games, and they have done so again with Dragon Shrine. Perhaps the downside to this method is that Quickspin seems to have taken a step back with this slot: Dragon Shrine is just too simple, and too elementary to keep players entertained for large periods of time.

How to play

Players will notice that there are a cool 40 paylines spread over the 5 lines of this slot. You will want to have them all activated, and you don’t have much choice in the matter either way. Players are going to have to use all 40 lines since they are fixed into place.

The good news is that you do get a bit of a discount with the paylines, since the minimum bet is fixed at just $0.20 per spin. Maximum wagers can extend up to $80 a spin, and that is as far as they are going to go. Flexibility with wagers is not this slot’s strong suit.

Features

Wild symbols: The wild symbols in this game appear as yellow blocks. No, that isn’t very thematic at all, but we did warn you. These wilds can substitute for all other icons barring scatter symbols, as well as act as the best paying symbols in the game.

Scatter symbols: Scatter icons show up as temple symbols in this game. They are the only green icons in the game, so they are quite easy to spot.

Land them on the three central reels of the base game, and you will trigger a free spins bonus consisting of 10 free spins. Land them in the bonus and you will bag another 10 free spins.

Dragon symbols: The second thematic symbol in the slot, dragon symbols are capable of activating a Dragon Stack Respin bonus. When these icons land stacked on the first reel, players will get a total of 3 respins, with dragon symbols capable of appearing stacked across the other reels of the game.

Free spins: If players can land the free spins bonus, they will get 10 free games as we’ve said. Alongside those ten free games, it is now possible to trigger the Dragon Stack Respin feature via the fifth reel (instead of solely the first reel).

During the free spins bonus, the paylines pay in both directions (from right to left, as well as left to right), boosting your chances of pocketing a decent enough win.

That is incredibly harsh, given the rather generic features in the slot. If you think that this is bad, then you should see the second-highest prize. It is only worth 3x your total bet.

Summary

There isn’t going to be too much forgiveness for Quickspin here. They have developed a poor slot, and there are no two ways about that. Dragon Shrine’s jackpot is actually laughable, its features are basic and tiring, and despite the prospect of landing a lot of bonuses and wilds, you seldom ever do.

Quickspin needs to take a long, hard look at what they have done with Dragon Shrine, and vow never to release a slot that is as beige and simplistic as this again.

For the amount you are going to end up wagering on this game, there are plenty of better slots out there which are worth a run for their money. This isn’t one of them.
