New Mississippi Casino Projects Get a Swift Denial

Regulators in the state of Mississipi have just reached a quick decision to deny two proposed casinos the ability to build on its coast. The names of the companies that represent the two casinos are RW Development and Jacob’s Entertainment. Both of those casinos had been previously rejected when they tried to make moves to expand. The attorneys for the casinos are still mulling over the idea of whether they should file an appeal or not. It may not be worth it to invest in the legal expenses that they would need to do such. When a legislature rejects a proposal more than once, it usually means that it feels strongly about the topic.

The legislatures did not give any direct reasons as to why they denied the projects. The denial could have come for many reasons up to and including the proposed physical placement of such units. State-regulated casinos must touch the land or at least be slightly inland. The addition to the regulations came to pass after Katrina hit back in 2005. The legislatures allowed casinos to develop slightly inland over that. Mayor Billy Hewes was one of the people who was opposed to the two casinos. His reason for disliking the request was that he felt that the properties were too far inland. Additional opponents also made comments about the position of the site’s proposed location.

Allen Godfrey was the main person who convinced the voters to deny the proposal. The meeting had taken only a short 90 seconds before the unanimous decision materialized. RW Entertainment is highly likely to appeal the decision, but Jacob’s Entertainment is unclear as to whether it would like to continue the process. It may just decide to admit defeat and move on to something else.

Casinos are having a difficult time getting established in Mississippi. The expansion efforts of these companies, unfortunately, have to be put on the back of the “to do” list for now. Maybe they can try again in several years, and the Mississippi will feel differently about approving them. As of now, it looks like such proposals will see a quick demise.

The opposing party is not unhappy about its decision in the least. It would rather have a scarce number of casinos that do not violate the physical limitations than to have companies trying to expand out into structures that go beyond what is allowable in the agreement. The voters reached their decision at what seemed like the speed of light.
